The main effect of Catnip, when taken internally, is the sedative effect it has and it is effective for calming and inducing sleep. It is useful in easing digestion, colic, promotes sweating, and controls diarrhea. Good for feverish illnesses such as colds and influenza, infections, rheumatism, allergies, as well as headaches, stress and toothaches. Soothes the uterus and relieves menstrual cramps. It is also a menstruation promoter. Externally used to reduce swollen eyes and is useful for dandruff and various scalp disorders. Good in ointments to treat hemorrhoids and as a rub for rheumatism and arthritis. Also an effective insect and rodent repellent.
Catnip tea can be made by adding 1 cup of boiled water to 1-2 teaspoons of the herb. Cover, then steep for 10-15 minutes. Do not boil Catnip, it will dissipate its healing oil. |
